Shakespeare in Swahili

24 Apr

We enjoy watching Shakespeare’s creation  from Midsummer Night’s Dream to Romeo and Juliet. Turning the tables around,  the World Shakespeare Festival reinterprets the author’s work in various global languages.

The festival celebrates the anniversary of the playwright’s birth.  And the London’s Globe theatre is staging each of Shakespeare’s plays in 37 different languages.

Shakespeare in Swahili, I kid you not. The Bitter Pills theatre company from Nairobi performed Merry Wives of Windsor in Swahili.

Merry wives of windsor

We know how hilarious the play can get and watching it in Swahili is mind-blowing. What’s next, Shakespeare in Teochew?   Oh one can only imagine…
